Hormones and Breast Cancer

December 15, 2008

I just read this Article regarding hormones being linked to breast cancer.

Maybe I am confused, but don’t birth control pills contain the exact same hormones as menopause hormone therapy pills? Estrogen and Progestin are the main hormones used in menopause hormone therapy.

Are the effects of taking these hormones only linked to menopausal women? I would think not. Now that they have been linked to causing breast cancer, I think more women should be made more aware of the risks of taking birth control. Not to mention the effects of these hormones/drugs in our environment, especially since they are finding more and more of these medications in our water systems. Amazing what they find in our rivers and streams lately.

The good news in the article is this:

“It’s an excellent message for women: You can still diminish risk (by quitting), even if you’ve been on hormones for a long time,” said Dr. Claudine Isaacs of Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. “It’s not like smoking where you have to wait 10 or 15 years for the risk to come down.”

so.. if a young person were to make the choice to stop taking birth control now to help prevent cancer, would she be considered foolish? I seriously think it is time to return to natural family planning. Less chemicals in our bodies and less hormones in our environment seem like a good choice to me, not to mention the moral implications of the whole deal.

I don’t know about you, but the choice seems obvious to me.
